College computing labs are available to anyone with a CAEDM account. There are three general college CAEDM labs as described here, and many other individual department labs. If this is your first time in the CAEDM labs, it is strongly suggested that you watch the video:

Lab Locations
There are three labs run directly by CAEDM, all of which have both mostly computers running Windows 11 machines. Their locations are:
- 425 Clyde Building
- 450 Crabtree Building
- 102 Engineering Building
CAEDM also administers the computers in EB207.
There are also a number of department run computer labs. Individual departments typically use computers with a similar look and feel to a CAEDM lab computer, but with additional resources specific to their students needs. There may be additional software or hardware peripherals available to complete lab assignments. Department faculty should make students aware of these resources.
Lab Hours
All CAEDM labs are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week -- if you can get in before the building closes. Buildings close between 10:45 and 11pm. They open around 6am. Buildings close early on Sunday.
Note: CAEDM maintenance occurs between 10pm Tuesday and 6am Wednesday, every week; during these times, your CAEDM experience may be unstable and/or non-functioning. Do not depend on CAEDM services during these hours. If you have problems outside of this time frame, please speak with a CAEDM Administrator.
Door Access
CAEDM-supported rooms are accessible to all students, faculty and staff who have a CAEDM account, but are locked for security purposes. See below for access information based upon type of door lock and the location of the CAEDM lab/room. Individual departments may sponsor computer labs with different access restrictions.
Coded Locks
The CTB 450 CAEDM lab requires a door code to enter. The door code is given to a new user upon completion of account creation. Existing users can view the current door code at any time from the CAEDM website door code page.
Proximity Cards
The following CAEDM labs require Prox Card access. Your BYU-issued ID card is also your proximity card. When the doors are locked, simply hold your card against the sensor until it unlocks the door. Labs that require Prox Card access are:
- CB425 - unlocked from 9am to 4pm
- EB 102 - unlocked from 9am to 4pm
- EB 207 - CAEDM Nexus
- EB221 - CAEDM Classroom
Unattended computers
Lab computers left unattended for 15-20 minutes will lock their screens, after which, they can only be unlocked by the user who is logged in. If left locked, the session will eventually time-out and the user will be automatically logged out.
Lost and found
Items left in the lab may be picked up by the custodial staff each night and taken to the lost and found in the Wilkinson Center. If a CAEDM employee finds an item, or if a student turns in a lost item to a CAEDM employee, CAEDM will periodically take these items to the Wilkinson lost and found. If you have recently lost an item, you may want to check with CAEDM, the building custodial staff, and the lost and found in the Wilkinson Center.

Resources
An assortment of resources are availible in the labs including Windows and Linux computers, printing, plotting, scanning and external media reading/writing.
Lab Machines
All CAEDM labs have Windows lab machines which have access to all of the CAEDM resources.
Printing and Plotting
All printing in CAEDM uses the CAEDM Print Driver. This system allows all printers to appear as one printer labelled "CAEDM." The only exceptions are plotters and specialty printers. Choose the CAEDM printer, then the software will prompt you to select which physical location will print the job. Printing is charged directly to the user's Signature Card. CAEDM Print driver download and installation instructions are available.
In the CB 425 and CTB 450 labs, Print Queues are displayed on monitors near the printers. To see the status of a print job in EB 102 or EB 207, visit the web page http://lp.et.byu.edu/caedm/printers/
Plotting requires special care and separate instructions.
Location | B/W Printing | Color Printing | Plotting |
---|---|---|---|
425 Clyde Building | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | 42W Glossy Poster |
450 Crabtree Building | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | N/A |
102 Engineering Building | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | N/A |
207 Engineering Building | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17 | N/A |
Laptop Stations
Laptop stations are present in all four CAEDM labs. These are empty lab stations with a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and power available for connection to your personal laptop. To connect your laptop to a laptop station:
- Plug your power supply into the power strip
- Connect the mouse and the keyboard via USB
- Connect the monitor via HDMI or USB-C
- Connect the Network cable via Ethernet (if available at your station)
- Be sure you have downloaded these clients:
- Print from your laptop, follow these instructions.
Digital Sender and Scanner
The fastest and cleanest method to scan loose or bound pages into PDFs is to use the Digital Senders in CB425 or CT450.
You can use the Digital Sender to do the following:
Scan to Email
- Place one or more documents in the document feeder tray on the top of the Digital Sender, or place a single document on the flatbed scanner.
- Select "Email", and fill out the email address field. You can also edit the subject and filename fields if desired.
- (Optional) Select "More Options" to change things like color, file type, etc.
- Press the Start button.
Double Sided Scanning
- Place one or more documents in the document feeder tray on the top of the Digital Sender.
- Select "Email", and fill out the email address field. You can also edit the subject and filename fields if desired.
- Select "More Options", "Original Sides", and then "2-Sided".
- Press the Start button. Both sides of the pages in the document feeder will automatically be scanned.
Scanning Multiple Flatbed Pages
- Place a document on the flatbed scanner.
- Select "Email", and fill out the email address field. You can also edit the subject and filename fields if desired.
- Select "More Options", and move to the third page. Select "Job Build" and turn it on.
- Press the Start button to scan your first page.
- When the first page has been scanned, swap the page on the flatbed scanner and click "Scan" on the screen to scan the next page. Repeat this as many times as desired.
- When you are finished scanning, click "Finish".
Notes
- There is a pull out keyboard on the bottom of the sender for easier text entry.
- Lift up the top half of the Digital Sender to reveal the flatbed scanner.
- Clicking “Continue with Current Settings” after completing a scan will let you make and send another document without having to type your email address or change settings again.
- Please do not save your email address to the local address book.
- Email is the only feature that the Digital Sender is capable of at this time - it cannot make copies or scan to your J: drive.
- If you don’t get your document within 5 minutes, make sure to check your spam folder. If it’s not there, try sending the job again.

Special Media Stations With Scanners
In addition to Desktop Computers, there are additional workstations called Scanning and Special Media Stations. These are currently located in the labs in CB425 and CT450.
Attached to these standard desktop-type computers are flat-bed scanners for scanning photographs, books, documents, and similar media. The computers also have media card readers for SD cards, CF cards, and other various memory cards.
Each computer has the following software installed:
- Adobe Creative Suite
- Photoshop®
- Illustrator®
- InDesign®
- Acrobat® Pro
Group Cubicles
Group workspaces are segregated portions of the CAEDM labs for collaboration amongst students in the college. Each workspace has extra seating, a white board and markers, and sound dampening walls surrounding the cubicle. As long as a group space is not occupied, it is available for your use. The minimum group size is 2 people. Individuals will be asked to leave.Teaching Assistants
Faculty and departments hire TAs to help students with course specific assignments in the CAEDM labs. TA hours and availability are assigned by their employers and can be found on course websites and syllabi.
