Install Mac LabConnect client

Installing LabConnect for Mac has two main sections; installing the LabConnect command line utility for Mac and installing the Microsoft Remote Desktop Application.

For instructions on how to use the LabConnect command line utility for Mac, see the usage instructions.

Install the LabConnect command line utility for Mac

  1. From a Safari browser, download the shell script installer from this link (right-click, then "save link as") to your "Downloads" folder. In a Safari browser, you need to right click on the link, and select "Download Linked File..." Save the file to the default location of your "Downloads" folder. If your Mac does not have a "right mouse" button, hold down the "control" key when clicking the link. Warning: if you download the shell script any other way, it may add text to the installer shell script making it not run properly.
  2. Open a terminal window on your Mac. If you are unfamiliar with opening a terminal window on a Mac, reference this article.
  3. Inside the terminal window, type:
     cd ~/Downloads
This will change your current directory in the terminal window to your user's "Downloads" folder.
  4. In the terminal window, type
     sudo chmod +x labconnect_macos_installer.sh
This command temporarily gives your user root access to your machine and grants permissions for the labconnect_macos_installer.sh script to execute.
Note: when the terminal asks for your password, it will show a "key" symbol on the terminal, and it is not possible to see what is being typed. This is so others cannot see the your password being typed.
  5. In the terminal window, type
     sudo ./labconnect_macos_installer.sh
This will run the installer with administrative privileges. Without administrative privileges, the install script will not be able to put the files in the Applications folder. The installer unpackages a few files and places them in the /Applications/LabConnect/ folder, and also creates a shortcut in your /usr/local/bin folder
  6. The LabConnect command line utility for Mac installation is now complete. Move on to installing the Microsoft Remote Desktop App.

Install Microsoft Remote Desktop

  1. From the Apple App Store, find and install "Microsoft Remote Desktop 10". Other versions have not been tested, and may or may not work.
  2. The Microsoft Remote Desktop app should install to the default location of /Applications/Microsoft Remote Desktop.app/. If it installs to a different location, LabConnect will not be able to use the Microsoft Client.
